A long standing interest of mine, which took something of a back seat during the classical music affiliations of my years abroad. On my return to floor singing it became obvious that the quality of the instrument played was as important as that of the voice. In time this led to replacing my original guitar, the spoils of a foray into an auction house and comparable in quality to an orange box strung with elastic bands, with a lovely velvet voiced instrument, cypress topped and hand made. A welcome feature of being a musician is that people give me instruments! Together with those I ‘ve bought over the years, the collection means that I’ll probably spend the rest of my life learning how to play them. One of the instruments I began fairly recently is the concertina; a deceptive term for a variety of instrumental options! Having invested in a Höhner 20 button Anglo, and followed it with an English (for definitions try www.concertina.org ) I realised that a Duet was the best option for someone interested primarily in song accompaniment. This was followed by the lucky acquisition of a 46 button Maccan Duet, whose idiosyncratic layout suits me perfectly. ( Say that to an aficionado of the English or Anglo systems and see what funny looks you get! ).
